The Importance of Topspin in Pickleball

The Importance of Topspin in Pickleball

Frustrated when you hit hard and it always flies out? You subsequently pull back and play a nervous game, resulting in your opponents more easily attacking you, right? There is a solution! Topspin. Forward rotation of the ball. Praise be to the Magnus effect which explains why there is a sharper arc to the trajectory when the ball topspins一changes in the air pressure surrounding the ball while it is in motion making it sink downwards.

When it comes to competitive play, there are four big advantages to adding topspin to your serves, return, drives, volleys, lobs, speed-ups, and dinks. The first advantage is the increase in consistency. This is where your learning should start.

Avoid attempting to maximize power when learning topspin. As a lower level player, it will not be feasible (at least in a consistent, reliable, and safe way) to learn power spin shots, as the coordination and fine motor skills needed to execute these are very high and require significant development, progression, and situational, high repetition practice of more foundational skills before consistent success can occur.

This guy spins!

Slowing things down allows flow with the proper basic techniques and balance to upgrade your consistency safely and effectively. With the sharper ball trajectory, topspin will increase your consistency in many situations, as the ball sinks and drops back into the court more often instead of floating out as it would without spin. You may not be wailing winners just yet, but you’ll be building a solid foundation.

Now that you’re consistent and confident hitting topspin, it’s time for upping that power, right?? Not yet! We must tighten up those angles first, the second advantage. With the sharper ball arc on the shot trajectory, it also becomes easier to hit angles, as the ball shoots down faster instead of sailing wide. For example, add a little topspin to your crosscourt dinks and watch those balls sink right in there.

Now that you’re consistent and hitting sharper and better angles, finally, it’s power time. If you’ve learned all the necessary foundational skills with situational footwork, bodywork, and paddle work, you’ll be able to learn power with spin while maintaining consistency. And you’ll be far less likely to hurt yourself.

Imparting this kind of energy onto the ball will significantly increase the difficulty for your opponent, not only with the increased velocity inducing swing timing problems for the opponents, but with the bonus boost the ball will do off the bounce. With both heavy spin and power, the friction of the rapidly rotating ball against the ground will impart a jumping effect, doubling difficulties for your opponents and soiling their contact points.

The power of spin...

But that’s only three big advantages, what about the fourth? It’s something that, perhaps, isn’t as obvious as the previous three: variability. With heavy topspin and solid overall situational technique, it is easier to alter and control the four other ball parameters一height, direction, depth, and power一all while maintaining consistency. Mixing it up, as they say, to disrupt your opponent’s rhythm and beat up on their weaknesses.

So. Are these facts increasing your desire to learn the ways of topspin and significantly upgrade your game, building confidence and dominance? If they are, we have a solution. At launch, Slate will provide a robust developmental program, using our STAGE methodology to fully develop our students (with separate programming and pathways for juniors and adults), where all the skills needed to maximize your potential, including topspin skills, will be taught applying modern sports science teaching philosophies. And we’ll ensure you’re going to have a blast doing it.
